Parent Education Classes
Our Parent Education classes are currently held at Medical City Dallas Hospital.
Specialized nurses and educators teach the following classes to guide parents through the various physical and emotional experiences that accompany childbirth.
Click here to register for parent education classes. If you are unable to register online, please call 1-800-554-2844. All payments for classes will be collected at your first class.
Fee for classes is a flat rate of $100 per couple. This payment covers as many classes as you would like to attend.
Preparation for Childbirth: A class for first-time parents that covers all aspects of childbirth, including labor signs, information on delivery, pain management, and caring for your newborn and yourself after delivery. The class will also touch on breathing and relaxation techniques, but is not intended for those looking for Lamaze classes. We recommend you also take a Lamaze class if choosing non-medicated childbirth.
Weekday childbirth classes are a series of three classes. These cover labor and delivery, cesarean sections, postpartum care and baby care. Participants will receive an American Heart Association Infant CPR Anytime Kit and a breastfeeding class.
Note: Preparation for Childbirth classes held on Saturdays do not include breastfeeding instruction. If you are intending to breastfeed you will need to register for a breastfeeding class in addition to the Preparation for Childbirth class.
Lamaze Class: This class is to be taken in addition to the Preparation for Childbirth class if you are interested in the instruction and practice of breathing and relaxation techniques for labor. In Lamaze classes you will learn to understand and trust normal, natural, physiologic birth and increase your confidence and ability to give birth naturally.
Refresher Childbirth: This is an abbreviated version of Preparation for Childbirth for parents who have delivered before. A hospital tour and American Heart Association Infant CPR Anytime Kit are included.
Cesarean Section Class: This course includes a hospital tour, American Heart Association Infant Anytime CPR Kit, and tips for what to expect when you are planning on a cesarean birth as well as newborn care and postpartum cesarean recovery. If you are planning on breastfeeding, we suggest that you also register for a breastfeeding class.
Breastfeeding Class: The number one concern for a new mother is breastfeeding, and rightfully so. Breastfeeding offers many benefits to babies and mothers and we encourage you to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of your baby's life. Because we understand how important getting off to a good start is, Medical City is committed to providing you with the help you need to make breastfeeding a positive experience. This class includes the benefits, techniques, troubleshooting problems and how to manage going back to work while you’re still breastfeeding.
Prenatal Yoga: Medical City Women’s Prenatal Yoga Program, set in a calm and peaceful environment, will focus on the breath, the body, and your baby. Relaxation and breathing exercises will allow you to connect with your body's innate wisdom. Gentle stretching poses prepare you for labor while strengthening poses provide necessary stamina. Yoga may help alleviate many of the discomforts of pregnancy by improving circulation, strengthening pelvic muscles and increasing overall comfort. A safe and open atmosphere encourages discussion of any concerns, as well the exciting changes of pregnancy. Prenatal yoga is an opportunity to relax your mind, strengthen your body and prepare for childbirth. Each class will be led by a certified professional yoga instructor. Classes held Tuesday evenings at Medical City Children’s Hospital Classrooms. Click here for the medical release form.
FREE Hospital Tour: We offer private tours so that we may attend to your individual needs. To register for your private tour please call 972-566-2252. Hospital tours are included in all childbirth classes.
